There are lots of things to consider when it comes to electronic smokeless mechanisms. In fact, researchers are still learning new things ever day. While some people like to assume everything about the electronic version is as negative as the traditional tobacco version, this may not be true.

At this time there is still just too little information to be sure what someone finds or says is true or accurate, whether its positive or negative. Here is an example of just such an incident:

• The Fraunhofer Wilhelm-Klauditz Institute located in Germany decided to test how these smokeless devices might impact indoor air quality. Researchers compared traditional tobacco cigarettes and electronic versions. For each type they took six “drags” and then compared the results of the air quality.

The results indicated that even vapor pollutes the air; researchers still saw levels of Formaldehyde, which leads to the conclusion that these devices should not be permitted indoors. Of course if this were 100% accurate that would be an acceptable conclusion. What actually may be the truth is that the three main compounds detected that would qualify electronic cigs to be banned can, in truth, be found anywhere.

Some studies done seem to show that your own breath contains amounts of the three compounds. And no, the studies didn’t show that it was only trace amounts of the compounds detected in human breath. These detectable levels are the same that one might also find in everything from paint to wood glue.

So what this German study showed was that the three main compounds were found in smaller amounts that traditional tobacco smoke results for air quality. But because it showed up at all the scientists made the claim that these two different types of cigarettes may as well be the same exact thing.

What all researchers and scientists want to make clear is that there are no safe amount of carcinogens when it comes to the air we breathe. Unfortunately much of this is found in the air we breathe anyway. It comes from building materials to cosmetics to even our much needed computers. So unless we intend to ban all of these items as well, it seems pointless to put all the blame on smokeless devices.

So What Does It All Mean?

Studies and research obviously need to continue. The problem is that there is already a bias against these smokeless devices. So anything positive that comes up tends to get swept under the rug. Of course anything remotely negative gets hyped up, blown out of proportion and very often “fluffed” up for more added negativity.

Basically when someone needs to make a decision about how they intend to view these new versions of cigarettes, they will pass by 10 fairly positive reviews or news stories to find the one negative one and believe it. They will let their decision be made based on the one negative story. The truth is negative news is what draws attention anyway.

No one reads the news for the happy go-lucky articles. They want the hard hitting facts, which in everyone’s mind equals negative. Instead of thinking there really isn’t much you can do, you should be aware of some things you can do:

• Collect articles you find that have positive research results.
• Share these pieces through social networking or by sending them directly to people you know.
• Make it a point to write to people who print negative reviews to politely ask them what their feedback is based on.
• Speak up yourself and get actively involved online and in person by taking a stand against the misinformation out there.

Most importantly, stay informed yourself and do further research to prove what you find, whether it is positive or negative.

Other things, however, fade away as the next big thing comes along to take its place. Look at even just how we listen to music over the years. From Victrolas and then stereo record players to 8 tracks, cassettes, CDs and now MP3 players. Sure, there are some collectors who remain old school fans of years past. Even they usually still have the latest technology but keep the old around too.

Until recently there were no other options other than the traditional tobacco cigarette. While there were those who were pipe smokers or cigar smokers, there just wasn’t anything similar to the cigarette experience, until now that is. The electronic version gives the same feel but with vapor instead of smoke. Not to mention the new version has a lot of other benefits over the outdated one, such as:

• None of that lingering smelly stink in your car, home, clothing, hair or skin.
• Forget always having to dump out nasty loose bits of tobacco from your purse or pockets.
• No more looking for a lighter or matches. Simply charge your device or bring an extra battery, and you are ready to go.
• You don’t have the trouble with being banned from as many places. Although some places treat the electronic version with the same guidelines as the traditional tobacco kind, you will find other places more than willing to let patrons vape away.

Hot… or Not?

Decades ago traditional tobacco cigarette smoking was thought of as cool. Every celebrity in Hollywood was pictured with one at the most elite events. It’s no wonder that with so many smoking related deaths the general public’s view began to change and shift. Although quite honestly it wasn’t until the past decade when things got really ugly for anyone who opted to still smoke traditional tobacco smokes.

The world was once a place where you could smoke on airplanes, restaurants and even in hospitals but not directly in patient’s rooms. However now the world is a place where you’re lucky to be able to find a place to smoke outside one of these places without receiving a citation and fine. It’s safe to say that traditional tobacco smoking is practically a thing of the past.

What Does This Mean for Electronic Devices?

The thing is not everyone wants to give up their after dinner habit. Some people still like to mingle and socialize with friends out on the town and enjoy a puff. For those people a new trend is emerging and that’s the electronic version option.

The bottom line is that people still long for the days when the cool guy had the cigarette dangling from his mouth and the posh starlet had one clenched between her tiny fingers. It’s a habit that no one really wants to see go, but it is time for a more modern version to emerge. Just think if you iPod connects through a USB cable and so does your smokeless device that means they are both from the same modern day era of technology.

It’s not about the lingering bad smell, loose ashes that could burn holes in your clothing or trying to bum a light from a stranger. This new trendy version of an old school hobby is electronic, free from lingering smells and doesn’t have the risk of burning your clothes with ashes. The bottom line is that it is out with the old and in with the new.

“An e-cig kit,” I repeated and even showed him the top three I had narrowed it down to. “Surprise me!” I said and then crossed my fingers he’d get one for me when my birthday rolled around in less than three weeks. Luckily he did pay attention and even upgraded the kit I wanted.

Still as I started using my new “toy” he seemed skeptical. When I was using this instead of joining him for a smoke outside after dinner, though, he became more curious than skeptical. The true test was my circle of friends. That first BBQ one of our friends hosted put me at the center of attention, whether I wanted to be or not.

Everyone looked at me like I had some strange unheard of device and then the questions started.

• “If it doesn’t produce smoke, what is that?”

“Vapor,” I explained. “The device heats up and creates a flavored vapor that doesn’t leave a bad smell on your clothing, skin or hair.”

• “How does it work?”

“It’s battery operated, which is what helps the vapor be created. Although I can also plug it in or use a USB cord to work it,” I answered before another question came at me.

• “What does it taste like?”

“Well right now I’m using a cherry cola flavored cartridge, but there’s everything from traditional tobacco flavors to super creative flavors you can’t get from regular cigarettes.”

Finally the focus turned from me to the food and I was off the hook. I couldn’t help wonder what exactly it was my friends were thinking about me and my new hobby. Had I made a mistake? Should I have left it at home? And although I thought as an adult I didn’t care about stuff like this, did my friends still think I was “cool”? Seemed a shame to think my friends would think less of me just for using an electronic version of the tobacco cigarette they were still hooked on.

Behind the Scenes

Over the following few days I got the answers to those questions and more. My phone seemed to ring off the hook with calls, texts and emails coming in. The questions continued as I realized it was just that my friends wanted to get educated about the smokeless mechanism I had been using.

I tried to give some answers, but I also gave my friends links to check out or keywords to Google to find their own answers. I knew for me part of making the decision to go e-cig came from the research I invested. I couldn’t tell my friends what to do or make decisions for them.

I could give some advice and continue to answer questions. Which is exactly what I did for what felt like weeks if not months to come. If nothing else I felt better about being a smokeless device user. I also felt secure that my friends at least hadn’t written me off for my new hobby.

Here Comes the Validation

One of the best moments came not long after that first BBQ, about a month after that night in fact. Our friend’s daughter was getting married and we all got to reconnect for the event. My boyfriend and I had barely been at the reception five minutes when our friend Angie came up to us.

“Either of you got a light?” she asked and pulled out a cigarette. At first I thought it was a bit thoughtless of her to ask since she knew both my boyfriend and I had made the switch to electronic. As I started to tell her that, she grinned ear to ear and ignited her electronic device.

“Just kidding,” she said and proudly showed us her new electronic cigarette. At the end of it all she also added, “And Brianna I owe it all to you. I can’t thank you enough.”

I tried to play it off like it was no big deal. I mean really who was I to take credit for a decision she’d made on her own that she may have made at some point even if she hadn’t seen me using one? But I had to admit it felt pretty good to feel like maybe I had played some small role in her decision making.

“By the way,” she added, “I think Marcus wants to thank you too.” She pointed at another of our friends who was over by the DJ booth and was obviously using an electronic version of the cig. Once you know that glow you can spot it anywhere.

I’m glad I’ve been with the brand I have for almost a year now and look forward to converting more of my friends.

Possible good news from medical experts

A recent issue of “Nicotine & Tobacco” includes an article quoting medical experts Brent Caldwell, Julian Crane and Dr. Walt Sumner. In this piece the trio of experts release the findings of their studies about these smokeless devices. For one thing, they seem to think that the popularity of these new devices could lead to a major advancement in the attempt at smoking cessation.

This same piece also states that there is hope this could lead to the prevention of smoking related mortality rates. The bottom line is that this is yet another piece of good news for the electronic mechanism community. Another point made is that many traditional nicotine replacement methods do not have a high rate of success.

That would include things such as the patch, gum and lozenges. In fact the rate of success with use of these methods is actually around 10% or less. The study seems to indicate that about 50% of test subjects cut down on their nicotine intake a great deal or even quit completely. What the hope from this would be is that more medical professionals will begin to get on board. Even increasing the number of studies being done would help to get more information about these devices and their impact on the body.

Arizona says “just say no!”

There’s a new law in Arizona that makes it illegal for residents to make online purchases of tobacco products. In fact, the law was designed to make residents make their tobacco related purchases “face to face.” So is this bad news for electronic devices?

The bad news is the ban. The good news is that this will not include e-cigs. Although the originally proposed bill did include these mechanisms, the final outcome left this out of the equation. So for now Arizona residents can still purchase their kits, refills and other related products online.

Ironically this is a state where residents can still buy a gun online, skip the background check and the seller doesn’t have to keep a record of the sale. So it seemed backwards to make online purchasing of these devices illegal while online firearms sales were still legal. So for now hopefully the focus will stay off of electronic cigs and maybe the state will review its own online firearms sales before worrying about these devices.

What’s the problem with the Kentucky Center for Smoke-Free Policy?

Sharing new data with the public is important in order to keep them informed. Of course that’s only true if the news being reported is accurate. In recent months, a spokesperson for the Kentucky Center for Smoke-Free Policy had a great deal to say about the supposed “dangers” of using electronic smokeless devices.

This same person also made claims that there is no evidence that could state that these mechanisms are useful at all as an aid to helping to reduce or quit smoking. Her advice was that anyone looking for a method to use to try to quit smoking should continue to use what has already been available, such as gum, the patch and lozenges.

The hardest hit from this spokeslady was that the electronic devices not only contain the same carcinogens as tobacco cigarette smoke but that this is just as harmful to the body as traditional tobacco cigarettes. The biggest question surrounding this attack is whether this woman lacks the data required or just has it out for the electronic cigarette community.

Any novice non-expert can easily do their own research online to find out there is simply no way to back those claims 100%. The bottom line is that it feels like a blatant attack that could mislead many users or potential users without even being accurate. There is also speculation on whether this “expert” is tied to big pharmacy, which, obviously, would be deeply financially impacted negatively if more people turn to electronic smokeless devices in an attempt to try to give up the smoking habit.

There’s plenty more to read up on and more happening all the time with this industry. It is important to keep yourself informed, but keep in mind that not everything you read is true or that it may at least be slanted. Before believing a story 100%, do your homework.
